Hm... I have no idea about the alibi or trick, but I think it might be the blind girl's tutor-- the tutor said that she wouldn't be able to use a bow for a while. As Kyu might have realized from seeing Ryu play, bowing is done with the right hand, which is why what he realized was not related to the piece. The bowing helped him realize what he'd heard-- that the girl wouldn't be able to use a bow. However, at that point I'm pretty sure the tutor was only told that her arm was broken-- which arm wasn't specified, but the bowing comment betrays that she knows it's the right arm (fingering is done with the left hand). Anyone have any ideas about the trick or alibi?

UPDATE: Megu says that the hallway lights had to have been turned off beforehand so that the culprit's eyes could get used to the pitch darkness before turning off the room lights. However, in chapter one you can see the culprit turn off the hallway and room lights pretty much without a delay in between (unless there was a possible not shown time skip). The only person who doesn't need time for their eyes to get adjusted to the darkness is the blind girl, who is also the tutor's only alibi. They might have been working together...

The flowers might have been placed to explain/hide the lavender scent, I still have no clue why there was a lavender scent in the first place though. Alternatively, the flowers have a trace of the smell of lavender because there were lavenders among the flowers before, which were removed. This doesn't explain why the flowers were placed at all, though.

I think the lavender is related to how Subaru-san knew how Makino-sensei was behind her despite being blind. If I had to guess, I'd say Makino-sensei wears a lavender-scented perfume. Subaru-san was able to recognize the scent instantly in the hall, so knew Makino-sensei was nearby. The thing that Uzuki-san heard fall and break was Makino-sensei's bottle of perfume. Even if she cleaned up the glass, the whole room was filled with a lavender scent. The only way to cover it up was to mix in a bunch of different flowers. And because the carpet was still wet, the perfume coated the flowers as well.

As for the alibi, I think it's as simple as Subaru-san is lying for Makino-sensei. Kyu is on to them since Subaru-san failed to mention their restroom stop, at which point their hands would have to part and create a break in Makino-sensei's alibi. Based on Makino-sensei's reaction to Subaru-san's declaration and her previous apology and gratitude for Subaru-san's decision to stay, I don't think there was an elaborate trick employed. Makino-sensei had no intention of making Subaru-san her alibi and Subaru-san is only being an alibi out of devotion to her teacher.

@tyuhvbn I think there is an implied time skip. The attacker was shown to be around the corner from the room before flipping the switch. Plus, we got a view down the darkened hallway, which I believe is meant to imply the culprit had to walk down the hallway in low light.

@fanged_loathe The lavender perfume being how the blind girl recognized the tutor makes sense, but why did she even have the perfume bottle on her person? Do people do that?

@tyuhvbn Yes. Particularly if they're smokers; the perfume will cover up the scent of the tobacco smoke. Also, perpetually wearing it means their noses get accustomed to the smell, and the more naive always think they're in need a quick perfume touch-up. And then there's the possibility of hot weather and exercise making it run off with their sweat, or those who use it and deodorant to cover up the fact that they just had a workout and have not yet had a chance to wash. Since I don't usually wear cologne myself, I can't say for sure if there are other circumstances that justify carrying a scent around, but this small list proves those who do wear it have reason to always carry a small bottle around. Additionally, if we assume there is an elaborate alibi trick - which I still maintain there isn't, but maybe someone can prove me wrong - the perfume would be the critical component for fooling Subaru-san.

But like I said: I'm not 100% sure if it is perfume. It's certainly something lavender scented carried around in a glass bottle. Perfume is the obvious choice, but there are plenty of other things it could be. What matters is that it is lavender scented, Subaru-san recognizes Makino-sensei through that smell, and the glass bottle containing this substance shattered in the crime scene during the attack to fill the room with the scent of lavender.

So you think that:
Subaru isn't in on it, and is acting as alibi out of loyalty/trust, and stopped holding Makino's hand during the bathroom break. (Or if not, the fact that she didn't disclose the bathroom break at least points towards her lying to protect Makino). Makino is afraid that Subaru will recognize the perfume, so tries to hide it with the flowers.
That would actually solve all of the mysteries of this case.

It's not just about Subaru-san recognizing the lavender, it's about anyone noticing the lavender at all. Anything that substance could have been (perfume or else) is only supposed to be used in small doses. Since the whole bottle shattered, the dose is considerably larger than normal, making the scent significantly stronger. Somebody might not notice Makino-sensei smells of lavenders normally, but anybody would recognize the scent in the room immediately, even if they couldn't name it as lavender. Uzuki-san and her mother would testify that the room didn't smell of lavender before the attack and that neither of them has something lavender scented, so the scent is probably from the attacker. In turn, the investigation is going to bring in scent hounds and focus on finding someone who smells of lavender.

Otherwise, yes, that is my theory.
