Is it just me or the manga becomes tame? In the first chapter, the monsters were deadly. A little mistake and someone died. Recently, they've been able to get away with stupid decision much easily. Like the whole pet ordeal

Bad match up, I say.
The first monster got done in by the military at the park.
The second monster are trapped in a room at 30th floor, probably scared to get out because of the helicopter.
The third monster, albeit free moving, got their head and tail exploded probably affecting moving and sensing ability.
Also, the fact that the monsters originated from the deep sea, and still considered to be young should be taken into account too.
