Orca furry (is that even the right term for an anthropomorphic cetacean? Like how lizards are scalies) was a weird transformation, but I'm glad it didn't last long. That being said though, how did Raphtalia not recognize her sooner? Did she only know the fat dolphin transformation appearance? Regardless of that, it means Raphtalia could turn into a fluffy tanuki at some point. Imagine having THREE fluffy girls (including Filo in her bird form and Raph-chan, obviously) and still being a sour man.

The author may not regret writing the spirit tort arc, but I sure regretted reading it. Didn't watch it when that season aired.

WTF why should he (Rock) take responsibility for a decision you (Nadia) made? He would have defeated you anyway even if you decided not to surr xD

The way this fight ended is a little fishy
Actually, they do have a lengthy conversation in the novel while Raphtalia uses illusions to give the impression of a fierce fight, and in the end, they make a performance trying to appease the sponsor, though it fails which leads to what will happen in the next chapter (I guess Sadeena isn't a very good actor).

And this is the part the author drops the ball again. the next thing is pure setup for the next volume, with a character that is bland at best, and the payoff isn't even good. Much of it doesn't convince, very game-like and cartoonish. If you thought Kyo was cartoonishly evil, wait until you get to the end of the next volume. Shield Hero is definitely not famous for having the best villains, but those guys take the cake. The worst villains I've ever seen. Fortunately, they aren't really focused on the volume, giving more importance to the other two mini-arcs on it. The good thing is we will get two really good characters just after this arc here end.

I make joke, she was being fishy, when an orca is a mammal
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

But yeah she gave up kind of abruptly. Kyo was channeling too much Saturday morning cartoon villain, but I am ok with it's because Isekai is the best invention since cocaine uwu

That last page. Why would the spirite tortoise arc suck? Some people are just to nickpicky with the little things.
Well the Spirit Turtle Arc was infinitely better - rather awesome in fact - in the WN. I sorta understand the need for the changes though, because it isn't about the individual arc, but the overall story. And the changes needed for other things down the line needed to happen there. I have only read the WN, not the LN, but I picked up on that much. Things like him visiting the other world, the Infinite Prison, etc... didn't happen at all in the WN. In fact, the other world was already screwed
a malicious and malevolent goddess (Bitch is her mortal incarnation). She's reincarnating people into these two worlds, lying to them about wanting them to save the world, and telling them to instead do things that are highly destructive to it. All so she can combine enough worlds, so the combined world is strong enough for her to descend. And once there she'll absorb every last bit of the planet's energy, leaving behind a totally dead world, as she has done many times before. But before that, she has fun by making people despair, especially the people she fooled into helping her, seeing their face once they realize they have been betrayed. A very nasty goddess. That's also a great subversion of the usual isekai tropes. There is a reincarnator in this world, and he is a piece of work... who will be responsible for multiple major character deaths. He of course sees himself as the chosen hero of a beautiful goddess, not knowing he's a pawn who's going to doom the world, himself and his friends included.

The 4 heroes act as anchors for the world, which is exactly why there must be 4, and why the rest must die if even one does (so more may be summoned immediately). The other possible means of "saving the world", is the spirit animals (like the spirit turtle) killing off about 3/4ths the world's population, using the energy of their souls to create a barrier that ends the waves. It's a last resort, but one that must exist in the worst case, which is why previous heroes only sealed them.

Arc and them didn't exist, or rather they died offscreen thanks to the actions of the reincarnators, and there was only Glass remaining. She came to an agreement with this world (not knowing all of this), to evacuate the citizens of her world (that she judged could no longer be saved) to this one. And this world is already the combination of 2 others, which is where the demi-humans came from, when they didn't exist in history prior to that. Much of the history, and this knowledge has been deliberately erased.

In the "game" they played in their respective worlds, the turtle was a boss that needed defeated, but it was easy enough if you did it early on. If you waited, it would have taken over the minds of an entire kingdom, began moving on its own, and been a much tougher fight. It was a bad idea to wait. So you see the trap in there, that each of them had a version 'game' in their world, that filled them with incorrect information relative to the real world. They did each come from different versions of "Earth", and yet this 'game' existed in all of them. Hmm.
But as I understand it, much of the original plot got thrown out for the LN, so that spoiler doesn't necessarily count for much with respect to the manga (being based on the LN).

That said, I regret that I couldn't see the original version of that arc get animated (or drawn in manga form). Couldn't they do an OVA or something? There, the turtle had already destroyed many towns and villages, and was getting closer to the capital (where the story began). They found out (the hard way) it couldn't be killed any way except killing the (not defenseless at all) heart and the head at the same time, or one would regenerate the other. So you have the MC solo tanking the head up front - with it's powerful energy breath type attacks, and the rest of the party infiltrating and fighting the heart. He had to use the same means that he killed the Pope with, despite the cost to himself. The nation's armies where fighting the summoned creatures, and many died. They only managed to kill it where the corpse could still be clearly seen from the capital.

And this event clearly painted the Shield Hero as the real hero, but the others as fools who got a lot of people killed with their 'game knowledge', a very big reversal in public opinion and treatment. He got awarded the village (which he requested) as his reward for this feat.

This is a rare case, where I would tell you it was MUCH better in the WN. I suggest reading that arc in the WN, because it was actually great. That's the worst thing about the rewrite, is ruining something good, even if necessary for the overall story changes.

Honestly speaking, Sadeena's human design is right up my alley. So pretty! (no, not the killer whale form XD)

Ofc we all know that raphtalia is THE ONE in this manga. And in the LN too, I imagine (not a reader).
LN hasn't ended yet, was going to continue when hiatus hit with 2020, and manga hasn't either -.- now if you want to know what happens in the WN I can reply with spoiler tags, I'm guessing you mean to say who MC ends with.

Was the foreshadowing in the WN/LN too, word for word?

Also that's the ruler of Zeltoble, isn't it.
Nope...Zeltoble is ruled as a Council of merchants and mercenaries (the ones with the most money I'm pretty sure) so it's impossible for it to be just 1 guy.

That's the point. Manga version is pretty much OK, really, even the "other world" ark is "ok" written, but anime, wheeeeeeeeeeeee man, they just suck big time. They are rushed, a lot of things is straight out thrown away or changed. Not gonna spoil you too much just in case but just watch ending of fight with Kyo and see how it was depict here in manga. There is not even a hint of resemblance here. And since people tend to first hear about title by watching anime version and THEN reading manga or LN... well... personally I can't blame them for that opinion.

And spirit tortoise arc specifically? Let's say it like that- it's like a big firecracker. A lot of noise in the beginning and big nothing in the end. We have a lot of hype building in the beginning, that impending doom vibe, nations getting destroyed, "oh no it's the end of the world"... and all of sudden "yatatata we get plot armor help" and when you think ending is gonna come we get the worst termination of action. And yes- I know that "other world" arc must have had some reason to come into existence but i the end it looks like spirit tortoise arc was slashed JUST BEROFE ending, we get other world arc and then, after all of this ordeal we pretty much get 1 panel summing up spirit tortoise arc that happened dozen chapters before and was suspended in the void untill now. And yes- I agree it's horrible.
You really didn't see LN, that arc was bad always...it's just the amount of times they fought the turtle in LN...1 ppl would have been bored like... (again???) and 2 the CG cost would be too much...also that's what they get for rushing 2 arcs and like 4 LN volumes into 13 eps instead of 25-26 and do it properly (in anime) in here they also changed things...though it was well adapted on parts.

God dayum!

It's been a while since I've seen forshadowing like this! We've been getting references to this mysterous Big Sister figure who helped out the children when and where she could. And suddenly, here she is! And in a way that does not break your suspension of disbelief because why would she bother with her human form when she spent most of her time in the sea?

As for why she would spend most of her time as a human in the arena? That's easy enough to explain. Nadia's human form is drop-dead gorgeous, and as the old saw goes, sex sells. After all, what's an even bigger draw for an audience full of lusty men and women? A whale monster annihilating all comers in the arena? Or a drop-dead gorgeous and sexy woman doing the same?

Beautifully done!

It also explains so much about Nadia's personality. Orcas are true apex predators of the sea. Not even most sharks will screw around with an Orca because seven times out of ten? They'll wind up being the Orca's dinner instead.

But strangely, they're incredibly cool with humans. (For the most part, anyways. Like people, Orcas will have different personalities and experiences.) And this is probably because Orcas recognize humans as being their land-dwelling equals, because few things can really mess with a human and get away with it.

No, really. Stop and think about it. What happens when a wild animal makes a menace of itself towards other humans? We band together and go kill that fucker's ass, that's what. Just like a pod of Orcas will do when they encounter a threat in the wild.

And once an Orca knows that a specific human is not a threat, they may become friendly or even playful towards them.

I guess a way of looking at it from an Orca's perspective would be like as if you met a space alien and had determined with absolute certainty that they were peaceable, friendly, and just plain curious. Wouldn't that be awesome? Wouldn't you want to get to know them if you knew for sure they not only intended no harm, but were also friendly?

And like an Orca on the hunt, Nadia is a very tough and no-nonsense contender, always hitting with an alpha-strike that is strategically planned out to completely end her enemy in one go. However, also like an Orca, she's also very kind and caring towards those she befriends. She took an immediate liking towards Naofumi because she saw in him an equal, and did what she could to warn him off out of the kindness of her heart. Otherwise, she knew she'd have to destroy him as well when the time came.

Fortunately, Naofumi had Raphtalia with him. And once Nadia's true self became known to Raph-chan, the tables immediately turned because Raph-chan is like family to Nadia.

I also love her character design. It's a subtle, almost sneaky kind of thing. You get the tiny hints of a certain wildness in her personality, as well as her looks - those markings that look a bit like some kind of fanciful and decorative set of tattoos and that mermaid-tail in her hair. And while it's obvious that she is a powerfully built woman, she's still depicted as being beautiful and graceful, with an easy-going demeanor that she maintains even while she's going murder-hobo on someone's ass.

Not gonna lie - if I was my own harem protagonist and I came across someone like her? I'd be aiming to get her into my harem if at all possible. Not only because she's beautiful and sexy, but also the practical considerations of what someone like her would do for my harem's makeup: a powerful and cunning fighter who is very family-oriented and will use any and all tools available to her to protect and defend that family. And best of all? She's a very intelligent person who loves to engage in highly intellectual conversations - a huge bonus for someone like me, who loves the kind of socialization that opens up new ideas and perspectives.
They cut a lot though...there had to be more exchanges before the transformation as well as a "fake fight" after they realized while they decided what to do and then they faked her loss way more dramatic. As to the whale thing it doesn't really matter in the coliseum as long as it's an spectacle, also as mentioned in other reply the ppl from the village had never seen her demihuman form, so it was more of a disguise. Also you haven't seen all of her personality yet...she's the type of girl like an "ara ara onee-san" that's smart and good at deciphering others, etc...I can point you towards someone else in other series with similar personality if you want.

He wouldn't they cut a lot of hints towards the amount of help they were giving her and tampering they were doing with Naofumi's group.

Ok, let's start with things you say...in the spoiler you shouldn't say "is" instead you should have said "is one of". The "piece of work" you mention is still there in LN haven't read WN but I think it might be different, as in those guys know more than they did in the WN I think from what you say. When you said "3/4ths" I thought it was "2/3rds". While you're right about the world of Raphtalia
being a combination of 2, those 2 are themselves combinations of 2 too.
Also what you talk about Glass' world
is still something that almost happened, but that's for volumes 17-19.
The second spoiler you said is still true, and while it had some differences this arc was kinda like the manga one to an extent, with Fitoria on the outside and the rest inside, then they sealed the heart and opened a stairway deeper where the core was and Kyo was there and had the other 3 heroes in. In the LN the other heroes thought you needed to be lvl 60 to beat the turtle and since they were around 75-78 they thought it'd be easy though they were only half right, yes it would have been easy at lvl 60, BUT they ALSO needed ALL the power ups from all 4 cardinal heroes and all 8 (7star) heroes which even at this point in LN they're still missing some...Only the dragon is alive because
their pet Galeon ate all the pieces and now knows that if he, etc. etc. to make a shield, etc. but Naofumi told him NOT to do it unless it was a case of extreme emergency, also because he didn't want to fight him.
the village being given and reversal in opinion happen too...hints of it start coming out on LN 11 a few chps in the volume and it leads on the next arc with the other heroes and pawns of you know who.

I'm of the belief that the villains are cartoonishly evil because they're meant to be personified tests of the protagonist's character as he grapples with evil without succumbing to his own. In that light, there's a particular value to their excessive, un-nuanced, irrational, one-note villainies that I can appreciate-- they're regardless lofty obstacles that complexly challenge Naofumi.

They could stand to be more complex and less on-the-nose, I guess, but can I even imagine how the author would go about that? How would that serve his purposes?

I'm not gonna crap on Sleeping Beauty or Cinderella because of how one-note Maleficent or the evil stepmother are, is what I'm getting at.
