This oneshot does remind me of a book called "White Oleander" by Janet Finch
I really like complex relationships between moms and daughters.

there are no excuse slapping your own kids when they just want to hold your hand. the mother was uninvolved at best, neglectful at worst no matter how much you value independence. thank god she has a good boyfriend who understand her, otherwise the female lead would have huge detachment issues with other people
