It's the big central hub for seeing manga updates and being alerted if anybody's uploaded a new chapter of it, it's been around for something like 15+ years now. Similar to (but not identical to) MAL for anime and Novel Updates for light novels.

The manga updates page for a series is pretty much always the first thing listed under the information section on Mangadex's page for that series for a reason. Making a group shouldn't be too difficult though:

Make up a quick name like "Team Medical Scans", "Ringo Scans" or "Juice Scans", give your profile id and whatever few bits of info they want and it shouldn't be much hassle from there. No group site or anything complicated required.

@ringo_juice baka updates is the main database for manga releases since early 2000s. I've relied on it since late 2000s. This was an age before manga aggregators that blindly do thieving crawlers are rampant.

They're still reliable though most people that just read manga the last few years never heard of them because they just go straight into aggregators.
