Americanos became a thing with US soldiers in Italy during and after WWII. They were unused to the strong taste of espresso so they just diluted it with water. The taste is significantly different than that of regular coffee. Personally I prefer my espresso to be espresso (zero or one lump) and my coffee to be coffee (black, no sugar, and by the pot).
