@alacaelum They are supposed to be 60 kg of rice, so 300 kg on her back (plus the platforms weight and possibly also the packaging rice stalks as well..)

When it comes to food, she can carry XD

Why don't they just sell some of their properties to solve their money problems? The ones where the tenants live for free should just be sold off to the yakuza.

Really? The temple own the land? It might be in the past, but in modern law I doubt that's a thing.

With that much land every temple must have been filthy rich.

If the temple really owns the land and has the right to collect rent, then they also have the duty to pay taxes no?

They did say that the nengu was an outdated law. In modern time the land should be the occupants' private property, and the nengu is just like some volunteer offering.
Religious organizations are exempted from taxes on temple grounds in Japan.

But not sure if these properties count as 'temple grounds'.

But just from googling 'japan tax exemption religion' some results were of it being used to evade taxes.

So there has to be some way to not pay taxes throught temples.

But of they have to pay taxes on the out of the temple properties they are a massive money sink.
