As far as I know he assumes it's a monster ability. I don't know if that's for sure because he has sage abilities and it might be part of that but I think it mostly just comes down to ignorance.

Yeah, Yuuji generally figures out what he can and cannot do as trial by fire. He doesn't test his abilities and skills until they're absolutely needed.
