I wonder how exactly they checked that he was not under the curse. I doubt they have analysis magic, otherwise they'd drop everything and get as far away as possible from Yuuji. I'm guessing it's simply the fact they had to come out and give voice commands; basically, they realised they couldn't manipulate him remotely, so they gambled that he might pretend to obey them, answer their questions and follow them right into a trap. That'd be quite the mind game they'd be playing.
