Not sure the old man's play here makes sense, that's an awful lot to risk by turning your sword on your biggest ally, when it's not like Ars up to that point has shown any sign of not being Ars Louvent since birth. Feels like this development is mostly to force the reincarnator trope? Because it seems more logical to conclude Ars is a genius with an eye for people, rather than seemingly believe he's not actually lovable Ars Louvent, lord of a tiny territory.

Nah it the classic ''We're almost winning so it's time to take out any person who would threaten my power after we win" (ie. competent people who aren't 100% loyal to you) as seem time and time again throughout pre modern history (nowadays we just kill them socially with the media), it's a classic move you can also see in revolution/resistance movement where people from very different ideologies or belief start tearing each others once victory is in sight.
