I always ask myself, if two people sit down and have a conversation, can the plot still work? If the answer is no, then it's a bad story. Not once have I ever had to ask myself if the two people having a conversation were too stupid to bring up the plot relevant points. I cannot believe that neither Selena nor her father bothered to mention the boobytrapped castle--even if the trigger was seemingly destroyed--how would one calmly stay inside a structure with explosion magic hidden in it?
