I'm guessing a spiral of self hatred that turns into self pity that turns into resentment. At least as far as the dislike is concerned. No idea why they refuse to work though

Exactly. Like, if they just get mad at her, I can understand it somewhat, but not working is the super weird part. It's not like they stay in bed depressed all day. If they're not out working then where do they go/what are they doing?
