I kinda want the slit eyes not to be the usual trope of Aizen type of villain, that's so overused and boring. There's no indication that smoke thing is luring the monster, it instead make them go away and perhaps he just want Lillie to shut up so she doesn't discovered by monster? Wishful thinking but this manga is so good until now so I want them not to use boring Aizen traits.

He wanted to specifically split up so he could use that repellent device unnoticed by our team, clearly for malicious purposes

Does Rock have both a monster attractant and a monster repellent? The whole purpose of the mission is recon, so I'll give him the benefit of doubt right now. Probably still a scummy guy.

What his party needs are replacement team members and information about monsters in the dungeon. At least that's what was implied in chapter 14.
