my guess is that a ship is to large for an out of board engine like the boat, and the paddle wheel avoids problems like how to make a water resistant seal for the screw shaft

Isn’t she trying NOT to work herself to death? I know that we’re still early in the chapters but at the very least she should have some kind of reticence that maybe gets bowled over by everyone’s enthusiasm or something. She legit went from talking about a slow life to literally making stones with her hands and feet to fill an order of 400 in like five pages!

That's probably how all achemists died by overwork a millennia ago.
If the manga honored it's own lore and world building in any way, the protagonist should be close to a burnout already.
