If these patents are protected by law in the way it's implied, wouldn't there be procedure in place via the government that makes this sort of scam impossible in the first place..? At least two other government officials from different branches should be present here, and there should be someone else distributing various versions of standard contracts who explains the general overview of each of them clearly. How can this one worker possibly be allowed to oversee the entire process when it is so obviously prone to be illegally abused?

The guild exists as a form of self regulatory body and bargaining body BECAUSE such governance doesn't really exist. Governance in this world is run through a feudal system which governs the security and interests of landholders and tenants. At most the Guild will be backed by nobility with stakeholder interest.

The guild governs its interests through civil means with contracts and threat of non participation. It's better to be in the guild than excluded, and not being in the guild limits opportunities and increases risk of exploitation.

I doubt he knows any of that, but from what I understood of the last chapter, his boss doesn't care much about his son in law and certainly doesn't care for his "granddaughter" as she's adopted. So I'm not sure the guildmaster will take their side.
