Kinda make me wonder about the high elf lifespan, I mean Aesir is considered in his 19 in human year right? And the last Elder Elf we see not look that old either
High elves live for about 1000 years. They stop aging after reaching the young adult appearance (20s in human term), so even the elders will look just like his siblings.

High elves at 800+ y.o are considered elders, and they gradually spend more time in mediation/sleep until their soul detach from physical body -- which is still young and full of vitality. In that sense they don't actually "die", they only choose to leave.

I honestly think this is better that Frieren in some ways. The beginning of Freiren explored this whole theme of time passing by differently for you than everyone else, and watching everyone grow old around you. And in the beginning it did that really well, going into themes of legacy, memories and parting ways. It was interesting exploring that from Frieren's perspective.

However later on, more and more it turned to pretty much just your regular (albiet well made) adventure manga.

THIS manga however, seems to never stop with these themes. Sure we got the adventure as well, but it never lets up on the non-aging aspect, which I find super interesting. I can't really come to think of any other manga that did it quite like this. To Your Eternity somewhat deals with non-aging, but at the same time that isn't really the focus of it

Anyway, good manga, ty tl

It's fascinating how similar but different this series is to Frieren. Aesir feels like he's staying more true to his Elven nature and taking his damn sweet time with everything and accepting that he'll outlive everyone and wants to simply remember them. Honestly learning how to sculpt is actually a great idea.

However Frieren had a moment of regret during Himmel's funeral that makes her want to now live in the moment with humans like Fern and Stark. It's wild to think that the Hero Party journeyed to take down the Demon King in the same amount of time Aesir decided to apprentice Blacksmithing, lol
This manga and Frieren are all a matter of perspective. We’re just experiencing Frieren’s journey much slower than we are Aesir’s.

Damn, 4 elders perished? How many of the high elves left? Do they make sure to have new ones in the pipeline?

You are actually on the mark. Based on the LN, he is currently 230 years old and Salix is over 900 years old.
Well, to be clear, I wasn't guessing, he says it in this chapter (in side text of one of the bubbles), which is what prompted me to be surprised about him just being 230.

We've never really seen high elf breeding, they can just manifest at an altar and it is still justifiable - Aesir doesn't really shows attraction to anyone else so far

Irena should breed as normal as there's clearly an unrequited feeling

High Elves here remind me of the Elves from Lord of the Rings, without the generational melancholy, but with the love for life I suppose they have.

the high elves we've seen: 2 dudes 500 years apart in age, one of which suddenly being the only one in the "elder" age bracket
the high elves we've heard of: 4 people of indeterminate gender who got so bored they decided to quit being high elves
the former high elves we've seen: a bunch of brainless little balls of light that are incapable of refusing their younger siblings' demands
i might just be forgetting, but I don't remember Aesir ever saying he had parents. Like, at all. High elven bodies are basically cocoons to transform souls into spirits, and he just woke up one day with his soul inside one and went with the flow without seeming to do much investigating (the "when in Rome" remark about how he was trying to act like he didn't give a shit before suddenly bailing), so it really would seem fitting for the high elven life cycle to be just "they spontaneously generate sometimes" & the only "proof" we have that they breed at all is that Aesir said they start as children and stop aging entirely upon hitting physical maturity.... which really isn't proof, they could still be spontaneously generating, and their languid lifestyles the majority of the time are entirely to compensate for the stress of having children pop out of thin air without warning to wreak havok lol. the stress of having parenthood sprung on them like that could be lethal to lesser beings

Well turning into a spirit is a sort of death, when we see his interactions with the spirits it's very basic. So while the live on forever as spirits it would be a kind of ego death, a loss of the self.
Don't they become "high spirits" or smt? Like the water spirit in the early chapters, that one had a personality.
Can't exactly remember if they mentioned which type or if there is even a difference between the 2 (did normal elfs turn into them too, but small? or maybe smaller spirits could become big, or other way, with time), but i don't remember ever being given much details of spirts transition, similar to how we yet to know high elf birth details. (the following chapters might finally give some details)
