As stated in the chapter, that can only do hit and runs on supply lines, and that's not enough to be a decisive blow.

A small group of elves can only fight a group of humans of similar numbers, maybe slightly more. But that can't crush a human army to the point that it'd require generations to rebuild.

I think they are archers bcause they live and hunt in the forest. They aren't just naturally archers. You don't really use melee weapons unless you have to fight other humanoids.
