If you want to let the first pages flow better I guess the idiom of "This is why I love the countryside so much!" could instead be translated into "I could live on this and rice alone!" (meaning I would find fulfillment in life and not need anything else).
@jonsmth The "liutenants, ministers and magisters" will by definition have power, else they'll get robbed or disposed of by people who do. Also, kings who wouldn't share the wealth would often fall to an alliance of people following someone who promised more equal treatment. (Hence why royalty always tried to mooch on local divinity - "going against me would be going against god", that kind of thing. Didn't help a lot of them.) But yea, differences everywhere, it all depended upon which alliances and customs were going on, and which kinds of people were currently holding which positions.
