I'm on the same page with you. I mean, cmon, i understand why it can be embarassing, if it's just nickname that you thought up in your youth, just because it "sound cool"...
But in his case, it's his actual title as "the one who slayed a dragon". Are dragons such pathetic wimps that it's embarassing to tell others that you are strong enough to slay one? No!
I would say that autor just messed up, he applied logic of our present time and real world, that can't be applied to magic middle ages. That's only embarassing if it's stinks from chunibyou, which obviously should be absurd notion in that novel.
