"Let's go fishing!"
Sounds like the start of a random chapter-long filler plot. Though slice of life isn't that dissimilar from fillers anyway, so it's fine.

That's a strong boot. Looks reasonably modern.

At least technically it's not. it's a Catholic thing, it wasn't categorized as meat by the church so people could still eat it at times when meat wasn't allowed. The classification just stuck and it ended up that way in the language.
Technically by Catholic standards, maybe. Not by modern standards. So as far as I'm concerned it's technically meat. It's like saying tomato isn't a vegetable, because you're talking about scientific terms, not culinary or legal terms.

Why was there a boot in the middle of the ocean? I don't like the implication there was a corpse there or a sea zombie.

you would be surprised by the number of ships that broke down in the middle of the seas through the ages. It's mostly due to storms, reefs are also a strong contender.

Oh, that explains it!

Speaking of meat, this reminds me of how we supposedly got terms like pork and beef for meat - those terms were originally also just general terms for the animal (beef for cow, etc) rather than the meat, but it was the wealthy elite who usually used those terms, while it was the peasantry that used the words we use for animals now (cow, pig).
So the wealthy would go to buy meat, and not deal with the animals themselves, and therefore asking for their beef or pork; the terms eventually just stuck for the meat rather than being for the animal.

Terms and Phrases is a rather fun and interesting topic. :meguu:

Funny, I was thinking about that as I was typing out the last post. I was also an ethnic split the ruling class were filthy frenchmen at the time and anglo-saxons serfs. If you're interested in this kind of thing try looking into Anglish, it's English with all the French ripped out.

Fun fact: In the 17th century, the Catholic Church classified beavers as fish. So you could also still eat beaver over Lent.

Well no, technically it is, but one group of people called it not meat so they could eat it. If it's a living thing, it's meat. It's not technically not a thing it is because one group decides to call it something else, lol. Catholics have zero power to actually define anything's existence.

You can also eat Nutria over Lent and that's a giant rat. Basically: "Letting commoners eat something because they won't believe in our religion otherwise if we deny them everything."
