yeah I was apparently at least half asleep when reading, I don't even remember seeing these.
these pages however do not explain the functional differences though, or how why it behaves different, only that the sibling found out that there is a difference.

That's because making the barrier without a barrier box is unprecedented. These two are the literal only people in the world to have ever done it, so differences can only be found when they discover them.
