Don't worry, I share your sentiments. Even though she committed an ugly crime, I do pity her and the situation she was in. Desperation is no excuse to commit a crime but I cannot help but pity the fool. I guess along with her emotions clouding her thoughts, she must've felt there was truly no one she could depend on or turn to, maybe she believed her employer to be a spiteful man who wouldn't help a commonor like her. Other servants wouldn't have been of much help to her either as servants don't make a lot of money. Or perhaps it didn't even cross her mind to ask for help in that moment, maybe all she could think about was her little brother and how to quickly get the expensive medication to him as soon as possible. And so she accepts the very first offer that was handed to her. And in her desperation, tried to justify her decision by convincing herself that Leila would be fine wherever she may end up because she would be valued for her violet eyes, but we see that she later regrets her actions and acknowledges her wrongdoing. I think she wouldn't have agreed otherwise, if she didn't believe Leila wasn't going to be safe which is why she had to fool herself to believe it or she may have not accepted the offer and save her brother. At least without hesitation, she chooses to sacrifice her life for the child rather than abandon her. Then it wouldn't have been hard to paint her as a bad person. I mean I know she was the one that got Leila in that situation in the first place but sacrificing one's life for another is the most selfless thing anyone could do.
She's flawed, stupid and naive, certainly, but I don't think of her as a bad person. I think many of us would go to great extents to save a loved one. Thankfully majority of us are fortunate enough not to have to resort to such crimes in order to do so.
Just to clairfy, I'm not justifying her actions, i'm just saying I understand her reason for it. I do agree that she deserved a punishment. And as fate would have it, her punishment came in the form of death. I don't believe she deserved to die, but I guess death was her karma.
