So these Hollows are like shadow people... or shadows that eat people's souls & make them their own.

Don't worry, I share your sentiments. Even though she committed an ugly crime, I do pity her and the situation she was in. Desperation is no excuse to commit a crime but I cannot help but pity the fool. I guess along with her emotions clouding her thoughts, she must've felt there was truly no one she could depend on or turn to, maybe she believed her employer to be a spiteful man who wouldn't help a commonor like her. Other servants wouldn't have been of much help to her either as servants don't make a lot of money. Or perhaps it didn't even cross her mind to ask for help in that moment, maybe all she could think about was her little brother and how to quickly get the expensive medication to him as soon as possible. And so she accepts the very first offer that was handed to her. And in her desperation, tried to justify her decision by convincing herself that Leila would be fine wherever she may end up because she would be valued for her violet eyes, but we see that she later regrets her actions and acknowledges her wrongdoing. I think she wouldn't have agreed otherwise, if she didn't believe Leila wasn't going to be safe which is why she had to fool herself to believe it or she may have not accepted the offer and save her brother. At least without hesitation, she chooses to sacrifice her life for the child rather than abandon her. Then it wouldn't have been hard to paint her as a bad person. I mean I know she was the one that got Leila in that situation in the first place but sacrificing one's life for another is the most selfless thing anyone could do.

She's flawed, stupid and naive, certainly, but I don't think of her as a bad person. I think many of us would go to great extents to save a loved one. Thankfully majority of us are fortunate enough not to have to resort to such crimes in order to do so.

Just to clairfy, I'm not justifying her actions, i'm just saying I understand her reason for it. I do agree that she deserved a punishment. And as fate would have it, her punishment came in the form of death. I don't believe she deserved to die, but I guess death was her karma.

@omegaxis1 You can't exactly call the decision "rash", when she spent weeks planning and then executing this infant kidnapping. Not really a spur of the moment thing. Now, her actually believing her family would get that medicine(ha, no chance) can be explained as naivety. She really only gets half points for protecting the MC at the end, given that she made it pretty clear she knew she herself had basically no chance of survival anymore. She definitely felt remorse, indicating that she wasn't a complete sociopath, but remorse doesn't really negate the responsibility she bears for her actions. I can empathize with the character but, at the same time, I'm very glad they didn't try to waive away this incident and give her full redemption/forgiveness.

Theories:
I think there's a high chance that hollows are a person's leftover magic. That "overlapping person" the MC saw, and the dad said using it is equivalent to draining your lifespan- whatever you don't use by the time you die becomes a hollow.

And, sometime down the line (probs toward the end of the series?) Leila will figure out some truth of the world which allows the hollows to become peaceful and/or disperse. This there will be no need for the barrier, and the nobles will be released from their duty as human batteries.

Eeeeeh about the maid. It was clearly calculated and clearly planned. She disregarded the law, her morals all for money. It doesn't matter if it's for her brother or whatever. That isn't an excuse to go into child trafficking.

Whoooaaa.. It's been a hot minute since I've read an isekai with a unique plot. Here's hoping this one doesn't get discontinued!

I don't feel sorry for the maid at all. Her dumbass did this to herself and to Leila. She could have easily asked for help, and no being 15 is not an excuse. Any normal 15 year old would have asked for help first thing before taking such a big risk with almost 0 chance of success from some sketchy motherfucker. The only good thing she did here was at least protect the mc before she passed. Now I wonder how long it will take for her to get back to her family.

from whats been said it seems like its not that hard to go back, the difficult part is to confirm their identity. she can just say that they helped her......... author really made it complicated for plot's sake
