To be fair, he says it like it is a deep and important thing with impact on all their descendants that they need to think over, very carefully. All he is saying is to not go into it lightly because it is a self-enforcing, permanent pact.
Yeah, I think it's objectively the right decision to go forward with their plan, but it's good to be aware/conscious of the drawbacks -- very easy to overlook or outright dismiss them in interest of the greater good. Like, it makes me think of how Lia's dad wasn't "allowed" to cross the country's borders to try and rescue her when she was first kidnapped (because he was too important to the country to risk like that).

I wonder how the royal family would react to learning that Alistair started having the people of Trent Force learn to train up their mana pools. That future the Wester family wants of providing the kingdom with a nation-wide barrier is closer than they think.

"Since the four lord enjoy special privileges, it's only natural that they have obligations and restrictions"

... well... yeah? That seems totally reasonable? I mean, that is the case for the noble class in general - they leave of the taxes, but must be educated to lead and protect the people (that's supposed to be the case anyway).
He says this line like it's an insane standard. :thonk:
"in general"? He means it's unlike normal "normal" nobles, there are nobles other than the four lords who don't have restrictions

Filling the barriers literally shortens their lifespans, iirc from one of the early chapters. But it's something only they can do, and any children they have are also forced to bear that burden in the future, in addition to never being able to move freely or take vacations.
It's way more than normal nobles in fantasy stories. Imagine being told as a child "your blood type is special, so you need to donate blood every week until you die, and you're not allowed to leave the city or miss a day, or everyone will die." It'd be like that.

Honestly, I feel like they should try and train as many people to use magic as possible. The they could offer money to any of the citizens willing to help charge the crystals. Even if they only give a small amount of magic each, the more people you have, the lighter the burden would be.
Also, using city or town-sized barriers would probably be more efficient than 1 country -sized one.

These guys have always been duty bound to their people so it's natural for them to put those shackles on themselves.
It's such a mixed bag.
