Well I get where you come from, but dude has no choice, he can't return to his world, and his secret(able to cast spells) was found out, wtf dude supposed to do in that situation? If he run away, they would chase him down. Even with that power he have, he lacked combat experience, he will eventually lose fighting back

It heavily depends on your perspective.
War is cruel like that... and there never was a good option.

From the old mans perspective, and the country itself they did nothing wrong.
He is doing his duty when trying to convince MC to try and save as meany people as possible.
And he did a good job doing so.
Its a perfect example of the need of the meany outweighing the need of the few.

he is aware from the death toll, and the fact it was effectively a race war.
So should they lose, MC would suffer and probably die anyway because of his lack of combat experience.
MC might not be a countryman who was unjustly drafted,which they became aware of eventually.
But hindsight proves the actions of the old man was right,even if it was extremely underhanded.

From MC´s perspective its a nightmare regardless as he was drafted to fight for something he does not care about.
(until he made friends with the people around him. )
The issue however, is that even if he choose to not join the fight it would come to him.
The dragons would not care about his nationality had he avoided the war, only about the fact he is human.
its is indeed very manipulative to subject him to the death toll of war, but the only way he had to avoid this would have been to never make any personal relations and just keep his head in the sand.
And the lack of human interactions would drive him mad eventually anyway.

Avoiding the war would have made things for everyone including the MC.
Assuming he deserted and ran from the fight nothing would have changed as we have multiple times his party more or less ended the war on their own.
Overall its a perfectly sombre depiction of the horrors of war.

Because MC was being a selfish ignorant coward letting other people die for his "peace". He got his just desserts. He doesn't have to be eager to fight, but he should be aware of the costs of not doing so.

War is bad, folks, even if it's the only option left. There are no good guys or good choices. That's why it should be avoided as much as possible.

Some commenters here need to understand that the Dean offered an illusion of choice that will save lives. The Dean isn't necessarily a prick, but he genuinely wished no one had to die for the pointless war, so the only choice was to make Ellison want to go to war. Forcing him to go might work as exposed to realities of war, but he might also desert or not try as hard. Letting Ellison cook and seeing the gratitude of students yet knowing they'll soon die was the only way.

He's not from that country, let alone that dimension. He had no family. His only friends were always other soldiers because he was forcefully enlisted. So what makes him a coward?

From my point of view, the country thoroughly manipulated him. Putting him in a position where his only attachment was other soldiers and then making him think that their deaths were his fault. Anyone would break.

If he died, the country would have put him in a mass grave. He had no family to return to. He was just a tool of war after all. They now respect him because he's powerful enough to be feared, but they had no respect for him before.

What exactly would have made him a coward?

1. Not even from their world
2. Is not part of their kingdom
3. Has no reason to fight in a war that has nothing to do with him

Also its not his fault that the others die, its their own fault. The fact that you somehow give him all this blame and Call him all these things, really shows how fucked up your way of thinking is… Wouldnt even be surprised if you also say to people that doesnt go to Ukraine or another place with war that its their fault that people over there die🤦🏼‍♂️

Nope, in a dire time like this, to preserve as much power as possible is the highest priority, so even the Dean will not have power to do that. Beside that, seeing how strong individually the dragon are, whenever they go as long as it is labeled a front line, the danger will be the same.

You're mistaking influence with manipulation. If you look at tactics of manipulation and other manipulative behaviour, this simply isn't what the dean used.

The dean gave him a choice which allowed him to be in a completely safe environment, doing exactly what he wanted to do, and revealed the truth of the extent of the destruction from the war. He never told him or suggested he was in any way responsible for the death toll, he never said he had to do something about it. Organising the list of deceased isn't even remotely close to any form of torture to start with.

Do you figure perhaps that the dean should have allowed him to be a cook but not realise the extent of the damage of the war? Just stay as a cook for several years, never hearing back from generations after generations of students being sent off to war, but knowing that the war is still ongoing? Even a dense person would eventually realise that the list of deaths is long and then Elison would still do the same thing and go to war. I expect Elison considers it better to have learned this earlier because that knowledge is what allowed him to make an informed decision about his participation in the war.

With that said, I wouldn't be surprised if we later saw the dean make a silly face and state that he edited the list to include some names Elison would recognise. That would indeed be manipulative. (And I would think it's well deserved because Elison is pretty manipulative - mostly threats and deception - in general.)
