Damn, the evil maid actually isn't trying to get out of prison, she's trying to drag the (fake) duchess with her to the grave. Because like I said in the comments of the previous chapter, the maid is an integral part of the conspiracy, so she would never be spared when the axe starts swinging. Realistically her best bet would have been to wait for a while and then get kicked out, dishonourably fired and penniless, but at least she would be free and alive. After all, her crime was to abuse Clarisse for a day or two, so I don't think she was waiting for an especially grave punishment. Her biggest danger probably was falling sick in the cold prison.

I was just thinking: "She's admitting she's complicit in helping orchestrate a crime of fraudulent impersonation... How does that help anyone? The maid confessing to this much just doesn't make sense."

I feel like the evil maid that can big-brain deduce that the Duchess must be forging letters with no more evidence than "no one has come to get me" and "the duchess can write" should be able to come up with a cleverer gambit than this though >.>
