Personally I’ve always preferred 2 with 3 as a small note next to the panel as it’s less work for scanlators (you guys are already doing so much). Also keeps the original art intact and you still get the meaning conveyed.

yeah, first point is pain in ass to work and most time can be awkward to read, so i think japanese font or third point effect works best

Still don't like him, but this bonus chapter kinda confirms something I have been suspecting about the Pope for quite some time... he hates this job.

He will do it, but every moment he has it eats away at his mind... it says a lot about his mental fortitude too.

Agreed, it is less work for the team and it does preserve the art too, some authors do go the length to make those sfx letters have a style of their own.

Also agreed. Sometimes the font used is actually important plot-wise or they're even visually part of the panel (like breaking sound effect visually crashing through the window), and small note translating the sound is fine for me.

In the example, the original Japanese "shatter" word/sound looks itself like it's shattering, which is neat.

Oda-sensei is known for creating his own fonts for his sfx, and in some cases, he has created new sfx itself, IIRC there are SBS where his fans are impressed by how he creates new "sounds" in some panels.

In manga, the art of sfx is just as prevalent and profound as the art of paneling.

Have you seen Kamome-sensei's Witch Hat Atelier? She has quite literally "reinvented" paneling in ways that are INCREDIBLE, some feel less like reading a "comic" and more like you are reading an illustrated book with those refined illustrated borders.

The characters and the world bleed in with the borders like there is no limit, like her imagination is so strong that the confines of a page aren't enough to contain it, but you never get lost in what is happening.

But she does use standard paneling too, but even those are creatively well used.

Personally I prefer 1 but since it's usually creates more work for scanlators for only a marginal improvement in experience, 3 works too. Of course there are some moments where 1 is undoubtedly the best. For eg; the scene in Tokyo Ghoul where a side character writes I don't want to die over his will is so powerful that I doubt could work as 3 and that moment lives rent free in my head.

I really prefer 1), but I know that this absolute hell on the redrawer so if it goes to 3) I'm completely fine with it.

1 is the best when it is done extremely well, but for normal online scanlation like this I say just go with 3. 1 is the type of thing you pay one specific guy to handle.
