I pity the man, the woman also of course.
She's going crazy and nobody could help.
The man was living a fate worse than death. With only pleasure and his wife's obsession keeping him alive, he should have just been killed instead. That way, he could have lived a hero's life instead of a caterpillar's.
I'm amazed he found his way to that well though, even when he became blind.
