...I'm not even going to ask how that blade can go inside the handle along with the magazine.
edit: on closer look, it's either sheathed inside the barrel, or part of the barrel that formed into the blade. Either way it's still bizarre on how that works.

I think those weapons aren't made with "common" material, if I would chance a guess... maybe they are made of some sort of nanomaterial that is "malleable" and can assume different forms without losing its consistency and durability, you know... sci-fi special materials XD.

I'd guess the blades are conductive and serve some purpose within the collapsed "pistol" form. It looks like a directed energy weapon of some sort so maybe they work as rails for propelling a small projectile? Could also be some kind of tazer I guess?
Kill a boss, level up, get new shit. Classic stuff.
I like her guns alot. They kinda make me think of the traditional Power Rangers side arm. The one that they all have that is a blaster/blade combo.
And the barrier thing is neat as hell.
Maybe I'm just being a grump, but I really don't like the direction the story is taking. The melancholia and somber poetry of the early chapters keeps slipping away in favor of generic shonen power fantasy stuff. The party getting a convenient power upgrade complete with fancy names had me rolling my eyes.

I can kinda relate. I initially picked up this manga after looking for something to scratch the sci-fi post-apocalypse itch after reading Girl’s Last Tour, and with the first volume or so it definitely succeeded! But there has been a shift in the manga, it reminds me of when I was reading a different title,
Frieren, which I also still enjoy, but in a different way now I suppose. The first two volumes will always hit different.
I still really like this manga— the world building is interesting, the artwork is great, and I also like the new characters traveling with the protag (I’m a sucker for non-creepy sibling relationships), but the mono-no-aware tone present in the beginning seems to be slipping away, which is a bit sad, since that was what drew me to the manga in the first place.
I’d like to think that maybe this shift away from the melancholic tone is representative of a new “hope” for humanity and our protagonist, and that this was a path the author wanted to explore all along, rather than an editor stepping in and pushing for a more action-based series (which I really hope isn’t the case, that’d be quite sad).
Either way, we’ll just have to let the author cook and see how they handle these new developments. I have faith that they’ll deliver!
Pick the manga: scenarios and vibe like Blame! and Girl's Last Tour. The loneliness, the scarcity, the low speed development.
Last chapters: a fucking shonnen.
