I don't know how people would have assumed season 2 would have covered less than four volumes when season 1 covered four volumes. It was literally season 1: volumes 1 through 4, season 2: volumes 5 through 8. Clear and concise. Every three episodes covered a single volume. The only time it wasn't 3 episodes per volume was the final sequence of season 2, where they added an extra episode to help give them more room to work, and even added details to the story that weren't there in the manga for Volume 8's adaptation into Season 2's Episodes 10 through 13 (Anime's Karte 22 through 25).

Still... not a bad guess, all things considered.
