Wait, he can actually tell that his voice is changing due to puberty? Thats a thing?
See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voice_change

I don't think I've ever seen a manga handle a boy's voice breaking before, it's so precious.
If this were to get an anime, would that mean the VA would have to deepen their voice?
God I remember when my voice cracked. I lost my voice for a full week. Couldn’t even do anything but whisper.
Worse than the voice changing is the voice not changing. There is a former UFC fighter named Anderson Silva. He is muscular but his voice is thin. My last comment.
Ichi getting all worried over his voice but Yamada is happy for it.
I have no memory of my voice cracking or this whole "can't talk" thing. Fuck.
@Acolytus I don’t remember the “can’t talk” thing either, but I do remember being 12/13 and my voice starting to crack one day and being super embarrassed by it. It sucked.
Damn, when your voice used to crack like that was hella embarassing. The worst thing is everyone suffers it at the same time.
I don't remember my voice ever getting like that during puberty. I only realized when one of my relatives commented on how deep my voice has gotten.
For some reason my voice isn't getting deeper. Maybe bacause i do not have a bigger adams apple.
@Nekophilia0410 for some, the voice doesn't crack and change all of a sudden, it instead changes more gradually (and sometimes barely at all). The world needs soprano as much as it needs baritone after all.
Ichikawa is so lucky to have Yamada appreciate his voice changing. During my voice change, all I got was teachers making fun of me because I couldn't whisper in class :meguuusad:

After that, people calling our landline phone (the phones used to be wired, you whipper-snappers, I don't have a lawn though) kept confusing me for my father, which was interesting at first, but got annoying pretty quick.

Though we did have a bit of fun when more classmates got deeper voice and we'd sometimes mess around and try to see who could go the deepest.

Yamada already feels this growth, this crazy desire to attack our boi is the hormones. She is almost reaching the level of her namesake, Yamada of B Gata H Kei.
And, just like that Yamada, she's fixated on a relatively quiet and timid boy that makes her feel comfortable and safe to be around, unlike most other guys.

Even if Ichikawa gets tall remember the same will likely happen to Yamada too.xD
To be fair, Yamada, as a girl, already had hit her growth spurt 3 years prior. Hence the age progression image from a recent extra (to this chapter) that had her shoot up between grade 4 and grade 5. She's potentially still growing taller, and out, as well, but the bulk of her physical height change is possibly over at this point.

Girls just tend to mature earlier. I figured it was common knowledge it hits them earlier than boys.

@Suzushiiro How are any of these students not at least in high school what???
I dunno how you can assume most of the other kids look like high schoolers. Sure, Yamada looks older thanks to her having been hit with the tall and big build genes because of her father, but all of their classmates look like middle schoolers to me, and Ichikawa definitely doesn't look like he's in high school.

The whole initial premise of this story hinges around what the Japanese call the '8th grader syndrome' (Chuunibyou), so it's pretty much baked into the story they're 8th graders, which is second year of middle school in Japan.
