@Metazoxan: The shortages are mostly because of hoarders who bought up everything. Masks can be made of many kind of materials, even some we already have at home. It might not looks good, it might not protect 100%, but it will do its job. And we don't even need that many of them, just a few so we can wear when going out to buy essentials and wash it when we come back. The problem of supply are being slowly handled as factories go into overdrive mode to produce maskes and medical supplies (because before this pandemic not many people need it, so of course the supply is low) Yes, social distancing is still the most effective method, but saying face mask doesn't keep you safe will just dissuade people from wearing them when they should, as well as creating a stigma against people wearing mask.
As for people going out and ignoring quarantine rule, those dumbasses are a different issue altogether.
