That last panel by the translator is wrong. Wearing a face mask does not keep you safe. They are for sick people to contain their cough or for medical professionals who also use gloves and other equipment to reduce the risk of infection as much as possible. Wearing a mask while healthy not only does little to help, since the virus speads through contact and is not airborne, but taking one means there will be less masks to go around where they are really needed.

@Metazoxan: I heard this kind of argument so many times lately. You don't need to use surgical mask or N95. Just regular cloth facemask will do. Some protection is still better than none at all. And how do you even know if you are sick and need to wear mask then this disease is asymptomatic? You could be spreading virus without even realizing it. No wonder so many countries are riddled with infected cases now.

@Cancel It's that kind of narrow thinking that causes shortages of essentials.

Yes some kind of mask is better than non in theory even if it's not surgical. But the problem is most place simply do not have ANYWHERE NEAR enough masks for just everyone to have one. That's why it's actually bad to be encouraging everyone to go out and buy them. In an ideal world everyone could have everything they need but this isn't an ideal world and if you want to be smart you need to prioritize resources where they can do the most good.

So rather than buying a mask just practice basic social distancing and avoid large gatherings.

Because you want to know the real reason so many counties are riddled with infected cases? Dumbass who go shaking the hands of tourists to "show hospitality" or idiots who go to a damn party where 40 new people end up infected (both of these things legit happened). So the mask is FAR FAR less important than just changing your routine and being smart. So leave the masks for people who can't help but be around others because of their profession so they don't spread it.

@Metazoxan: The shortages are mostly because of hoarders who bought up everything. Masks can be made of many kind of materials, even some we already have at home. It might not looks good, it might not protect 100%, but it will do its job. And we don't even need that many of them, just a few so we can wear when going out to buy essentials and wash it when we come back. The problem of supply are being slowly handled as factories go into overdrive mode to produce maskes and medical supplies (because before this pandemic not many people need it, so of course the supply is low) Yes, social distancing is still the most effective method, but saying face mask doesn't keep you safe will just dissuade people from wearing them when they should, as well as creating a stigma against people wearing mask.
As for people going out and ignoring quarantine rule, those dumbasses are a different issue altogether.
