Though I will say, it seems I was totally right about his harsh previous life having little (or nothing) to do with his current life, so there was no reason to have it been so frustrating.

I wouldn't say that. His harsh past life made him into the man he is today, and has set him up to have a good mentality when facing adversity.

Sure, but the issue is it's frustrating and unsatisfying for the reader. Why show him being abused and used specifically by his old boss and ex, and then murdered by them, with no recompense? There's no point to it.

You could have showed MC's perseverance and dedication to helping people through him just being a doctor at a very busy hospital, or perhaps being a war medic, or any other numerous scenarios; the one they used works, but is just annoying.
We're left with a feeling of wanting karmic revenge against those who wronged him, but these feeling have nowhere to go.
