just a check but the guy died his soul was used to revive the child of the dragon because it was probably dying now he is in a weird middle state isn't he?

I am used to it from this kind of stories but the beginning doesn't seem to make much sense. They could move around the area freely enough to collect stuff (plus leisurely talk with him after stabbing him) but going back out is suddenly dangerous enough that they decide they need a decoy? Plus if that all that it takes just bring some animal to kill.
