@PhantomStarlight for a long time, china has had a law that dictates a family may only have ONE child, and any more are aborted or otherwise terminated. For whatever cultural reasons, boys were preferred over girls.... to the point that if the parents were determined enough and the baby is a girl, they'd dispose of her and try again. I am not making this up.

That law was finally repealed very recently, as its long term abuse has lead to a severely disproportionate number of males vs females in china. It's to the extent there are entire villages in china with *no* women.
