If you go back and read Chapter 17, it looks like Dowun is genuinely smiling up until she declares that she tried to overtake him. In Chapter 20 (I think, I didn't check the number) he finds out that she has another savior besides him and the emotions on his face change instantly. It's like for the first time he realized that he isn't the only one who can fulfill his role. Chapter 21, he also seems to believe that she's capable of destroying him if she gets angry. So yes, he's extremely manipulative but this isn't as simple as him just trying to take advantage of her. There seems to be a genuine respect that he has for her. He may feel like he has to keep being useful to her to keep his position as her (almost) husband.

We haven't really seen his point of view yet. Despite all the manipulation, he seems to stay honest with her and her Dad minus that one partial truth about the Emperor being punished.

Probably shouldn't have disrespected her mother and desecrated the grave she made for her in the first place. Whatever goodwill this gesture will get Dowun, it would be very fleeting since she definitely knows he's manipulating her.

Maybe their conversation during breakfast was him trying to smooth talk her by implying that he's changed since that incident, before showing her her mother's tablet as proof of said change.

He's likely smart enough to know this wouldn't be enough the same way she knows he's full of shit. This move is probably just one of the steps in his plan to get back into the queen's good graces.

Oh you're right ! I went back and checked those chapters you mentioned. He definitely was truly smiling in chapter 17.
Anyway, I don't dislike Dowun and if he were to end up with her then so be it.
The story is really intriguing . It's one of those stories where you can't be sure whether it will end happily or sadly and It makes each chapter exciting plus worth the read!
That said I'm really enjoying this.

Maybe this manhwa isn't that complex, Dowun is a classic tsundere ML that can't express his own feelings... which i find pretty garbage expecially if Lyon turns to be masochist and accepting him in the end, and Baek Han only serves as 2nd guy who can never win his role only to move the plot and to open the first guy's heart, this is no different than mediocre shoujo manga.

Ehhh, after the shit Dowun's done in the past, and with Baek Han beating him to the punch the day before, I doubt him doing this is sincere. He's probably just trying to secure Hong Lyon's loyalty by pretending to care. I'd bet he had a spy report to him about seeing Hong Lyon and Baek Han at her mom's grave and got the idea from there.

Even if he's manipulating her, this was the clever thing to do.

Someone more stupid than Dowun might have tried to corner her, to question her actions or her motives. However, that would be a pitfall. Even Dowun has realized by now that the queen has had to grow up very soon, very fast, and that there's a big part of her that resents that cold "the end justifies the means" modus operandi. Be nice to her and you'll get better results.
