Seems doubtful that they'd missed it. I'm assuming they had to retcon it for some reason, though they are in class 2B at the start of both the manga and anime.

I think we can consider the first some-odd chapters of the manga to be a bit of a scattershot in terms of when these events happen. Mie goes from winter uniform to summer uniform between chapter 5 and chapter 6. We learned later that Kaede and Mie's birthdays are in November in chapter 91. Which would mean they wouldn't be turning 14 until most of the way through their second year in middle school. Mie is wearing the winter uniform for all five current episodes of the anime. Perhaps the retcon is to have the plot of the first four episodes taking place before their birthdays in their second year before episode 5 hits the Valentine's day story. The bulk of their developing romance seems to take place during their third year.
