Maybe he's spent so much time listening to what people expect you to like, that he needed to listen to what someone genuinely likes. Tried making it sound as philosophical as I can, but maybe someone else can think of something better.
The difference between “creating music for a commercial audience” versus “creating music because you and others enjoy it.” It might not tick those boxes of what is “in” at the moment, and that’s good actually. It’s the reason big studios and companies just release the same old thing, franchises, sequels, remakes. It’s because it’s “proven”. They are completely risk adverse.

Pretty much this, yeah. Unlike the various bands the dad works with, Mitsuki is only making that song with one person in mind, so she doesn't limit herself by trying to please as wide an audience she can.

I really like that her music isn't perfect, usually in a scene like this in a story the old music guy would be blown away how fresh and new and perfect the MC's music is, an unknown perfect talent, but...no Mitsuki's music isn't perfect but its the joy she has for music is what interests him.

idunno, to me that hits far more.

I hope now that he's noticed his daughter for once now that she's useful to him in some way that the dad realizes (and properly apologizes for) what an emotionally neglectful and unavailable parent he is, I don't want things to be all hunky dory like he wasn't failing as a parent until his daughter brought him something interesting enough to make her worth paying attention to.
