I think it's fine when it's actually necessary for the hero to sacrifice themself to succeed. Sadly 9 times out of 10 they do it just because.

Well…the trend is for the hero to arrive fashionably late for maximum heroism…but i do agree that that trope’s already milked dry right now and i’d prefer my hero be more…punctual in their dynamic entry.
