That's just as fucked up. They paint him as a good, emphatic guy but he thought of his kids as merely numbers. Not saying it's wrong for the setting, but he was not such a nice guy.
And functionally speaking, his plan "worked". Terribly.
It just was stupidly inefficient. And failed its original goal.
Need to see more backstory and history of the world to make judgement.
You'd think a country with friendly ties with the Demon Lord would be respected a bit.
Or at least feared enough for M.A.D. principles to not be attacked.
