Here is the Afterword from the previous volume. As always, thanks to Bottibott for the TL.

Sorry for the delays on this one. Summers are busy for me and I've been sick the past few weeks. Things should return to a more normal pace from here on out!

I have to disagree, if someone play as mario. I don't want to see someone pretending to be mario, but Mario himself

I've read raw before but my thought remains the same. This director is giving out non-sense criticism. I think this is inherently a U149 problem as I recall there're many other instances like this, e.g. that time with Momoka bungee jump.

I don't think the criticism of Kozue is entirely out of line here, though. Like the producer said, they're taking on these roles not primarily as actors, but as idols — fans want to see their idols as the characters, not some interchangeable nonentities. The previous director's "more like a child" stuff was, indeed, meant to be partly nonsense, but this is, I think, a fair learning opportunity for Kozue.

The director characters just play the role of antagonist in the story because there isn't really anyone else who could do it. The major narrative device of U149, both the anime and manga, is that Producer must somewhat protect the idols from the harshness and cynicism of the entertainment industry, while still respecting their independence and maturity. Even though the girls are very talented, they're still kids and somewhat naive to these things. This usually manifests with some director character hurting an idol's feelings in the manga, and in the anime it's Shiki and Frederica accidentally bullying Nina even though they mean no harm. The point is that sometimes these older characters don't understand that the things they are saying could hurt or confuse the girls, and Producer gets to act as a mediator because he understands the adult world and the idols, so he can come up with some solution to help them advance past the troublesome director.

I can understand this specific director's criticism though. If Kozue is playing a character and doing so by imitating Miria and other idols, how accurately is she portraying the character? After all, the character in the play is not Miria.

I feel like the criticism by the director here is incredibly fair. It's very apparent if you've bene to a script reading before—the same parts in the script can be interpreted very differently by different actors. Even the same characters can feel very different, too. Some actors made their schtick their whole brand, even, to the point of getting typecasted.

Character fidelity when adapting something from a different medium is one thing, but that depends on the playwright and the director. Character interpretation is something that the actors add as a creative, and it's something that could not be conveyed through non-acted media.

Kozue did not give 'Kozue-ness' because she was so used to entirely resetting her personality expressions by borrowing from other people. She did not have Kozue-gestures, Kozue-looks, Kozue-tics, or anything that adds to the character beyond what was written and explicitly directed. She did not add how she feels about the character, how she thinks the character would behave, none of those. Like Mio analyzed, Kozue simply tuned things to the patterns of other people.

In this regard, there is no Yusa Kozue in the role, and that's the problem.
