I think Erina ascended and Shirone just met her. She wasn't a mage but her insight was good enough that you could call her omnipotent. Giving her alpheas' memories probably gave her omniscience as well. I'll bet that she was put into a similar state as Shirone, and the reason she was so sure he wouldn't make it back is because she failed to. Meanwhile, Shiron ascended and managed to return. Possibly because he's the perfected fusion of the both of their memories.

Throwing out a curveball here and it seems I’m of the same opinion of the above commenter I’m wondering if her receiving Alpheas’ memories maybe pushed her into Immortal Function and she somehow maybe became a “Goddess” which she called herself but we have no way of knowing if she’s really a God as Shirone called her a liar probably wrong but would be cool af

I understand why you'd say it was Erina but the physical and mental change, and her saying 'Headmaster Alpheas', instead of just 'Alpheas' makes me feel dubious about it.
