Rather than punishment, I'd say they need to atone. The difference is often forgotten by most systems of criminal justice.

Yes that! I had the feeling, but wasn't sure if legal systems would allow for it. Thinking about it now, their biggest crime is the kidnapping, but seeing as the victims are safe and the two of them helped with proving Shirone's- uh... "not death" they could get off better

I really hope they don't let them off scot-free, Arin is a little bit better because she at least show some semblance of remorse (though that seems mostly tied up with her own self interest) but Canis at no point has shown he feels even a little bit sorry.
