y'all this is why this manhwa (and its novel) is one of my standout faves.

she honours rebecca's memory of being subject to the kingdom's patriarchy by saying yes i love you, but no, i will not trade who i am (and what i have gained) in exchange for romance and an empress-ship i'm not even sure i will cherish more than what i have already earned. and she yearns, but she doesn't regret (nor is this played off as her testing lucius' love).

she gave up this romance because she knew what kind of life she wants. and that lucius changes the law/constitution because he knows that is the obstacle is 🥺

Uprooting the entire fucking continent's culture, norms and laws JUST to satisfy a single woman is an even bigger ask.
1. She didn't ask that. She made her choice and was content to let it be.
2. What he's giving up is apparently a year of hard work to improve the lives of his subjects, aka, his job. Albeit more then many might expect of him, but a rulers job is to protect their subjects and improve their lives as best as they're able.

Like... there's a lot of room for debate, but what he's giving up personally is less then he asked her to give up.

You're aware 50% of the population will benefit of changing this law, right?

...The way that discussion derailed was so amusing, lol

Paul is so moved by it man, it really is too much... how do you even react to something that? Lol xD

It really is a problem specifically with Acrean law tho, the conquered countries were a lot more equal, even Paul's... Emperor basically rushed the solving of the issue so they could be together, it's totes sweet o3o
