You held onto the doubt until proof was given. That isn't stupidity, but scientific rigor.

I do find it quite interesting with how gender has become less important of a characteristic that matters to a character's persona. Who they see themselves as is more important than what is between their legs. An anthropologist could have a field day writing about this trend.

It was a fair idea to be neutral, with lack of pronouns, the design could go either way and while the name Kyle is usually used for guys it is technically a unisex name.

Being gender neutral when not knowing the character's gender for sure was the proper choice. Making assumptions can bite translators in the ass.

One of the biggest I remember was the original translators of Denki-gai no Honya-san decided to not use honorifics and as a result assumed Hiotan's nickname was Hio, removing the tan because they thought it was an honorific. A couple of volumes later we found out that the whole thing was her nickname, so all those chapters using Hio were wrong and never fixed.
