What's the difference between a skill and ability? Why isn't plus 1 undead (bloodkin) a strength?

What's the difference between a skill and ability? Why isn't plus 1 undead (bloodkin) a strength?

I think the difference between skill and ability is that a skill is something that you use like rise a corpose, throwing a fireball etc, meanwhile an ability is like "when hp is under 50% your speed increases by 70%" or something like that. And I think that with strength it meant literal strength like the more you upgrade it the stronger you are.
