He wasn't throwing it, even trying to do it he was still too strong for her to even realize that and he could always do shitty excuse that he wanted to give her false hope to crush it yadda yadda. And being strong but "not too strong" to give up would've been a good stimulus for his harem to grow stronger than before in preparation for the war. which seems more reasonable to me than his masked hero act.

Frey would have to be way, way stronger than what he showed in the duel to survive the events in the forest. Like obscenely stronger, like coughing baby vesus hydrogen bomb levels of comparison. It would immediately cause Irina to become incredibly suspicious because current Frey would be revealed to be 10000 times stronger than she remembered at the end of her previous life.

But aside from that, that plan might have worked if the duel hadn't already progressed to the point it did before the teleportation. Specifically, pretending to get suckerpunched by a fireball and rolling on the ground like a clown.

According to Frey's actions so far, he's a vain idiot that would use an illegal black magic artifact to look good/avoid getting beat up by Isolet in a public exam. There's no way he'd roll around on the floor in front of a bunch of commoners just to give her false hope. And if he was as strong as he shows he is in the forest, there's zero chance he'd get hit by the sucker punch, so he can't even realistically say he got caught off guard by it.

She would kill him the first chance she got, even if it made getting out of the forest much harder. All the main girls want to murder him, with the exception of Kania now. It would be a golden opportunity for Irina to kill the son of a duke with nobody ever finding out what really happened.
