Probably doing it to save face, like how he pressured Alex to accepting the dance invitation. Could also be that it's far easier to dispose of a person who was already unfavourable in some of the public's eye rather than the person you just married for political reasons

Alex's optimism was naive. "Work hard, be respected?" Nope. Tossed aside as soon as she was inconvenient, because Aristocratic men in this series are all hypocrites and creeps.

I think Alex and Charlotte might find some commonality in this. Charlotte too, was treated like a pawn, and she chose to crash out. Alex might have strength of Arms, but Charlotte has superior strength of will. If they team up, the crash-out will be spectacular!

The way I saw it, the prince only made her his knight and was getting chummy because she saved his life. Alex may have viewed him as a good friend, but I don't think he reciprocated

it's unclear if the princess even gave that story of if he simply made it up. personally, it seems more likely that he made it up. the princess's goal is to make enough of a humiliating scene to get the engagement called off. with that goal in mind, she'd be running toward accepting the blame, not pushing it off onto alex.
