I’m re-reading Tetsunaki no Kirinji for the first time since middle school and tbch! The doctor is painted as the villain but he’s completely correct 😭 an unemployed 30 year old ex-husband with no work history addicted to mah-jongg gambling is not a suitable coparent 😭 HELLO?

In the past few years, I've picked riichi mahjong so I came back to read this again, and you're right. The doctor might've put it bluntly, but it's insane to entrust a small child with an unemployed man who gambles for his income. I think people just like rooting for the underdog, completely forgetting what it takes for him to actually feed his child.

yup lol of course, the doctor doesn't have to be a douche about it but it's true.

I have a bit of family history that's similar as well, with a grandparent/father figure somewhere in my ancestry being addicted to gambling and would always get into arguments with his wife, and apparently he died quite young due to cancer.

I'm sure it's not the full story since this was like something passed down from a long time and few generations ago but it is wild.
