Overall, it was an enjoyable read that hooked me in quite well, though there were a few problems with it:
- The art was often far too messy for its own good.
- Characters would often become hard to distinguish because of the previous point, this was particularly bad for the Daughter and her girlfriend, who are so similar in design that I didn't know who was who, and would get confused when scenes would switch between them (thinking it was still the same character). Sometimes characters look completely different than they had earlier, such as the Auntie, who looks haggard and elderly towards the ending of the comic, compared to earlier on. Character consistency and being able to distinguish them are extremely important for a comic, and this one lacks these essentials.
- Another point against the art is that because of it's 'arty' shots, it could be hard to understand who was speaking at times.
- On the writing, what was with the focus on the Father's failed attempts at relationships? I don't think they benefited the story anymore than someone simply saying "he isn't over his dead wife".
- The inclusion of a sister seemed odd; this is a family drama, and yet she doesn't appear at all in the comic and is just briefly mentioned at the beginning and end. It seems like her leaving so suddenly should have had a bigger impact, or she should have appeared in the story, otherwise there was no point in her existing in the story at all.
- Finally, after everything, I feel like there needed to be just one more chapter to give an indication of where the life of the Father is going. Is he now open to love? Will the Daughter and her partner move into his home like he initially suggested at the start of the story? He was initially the main focus of the story, it seems odd to not focus on him at all really at the end.
Despite my complaints, it was still a gripping read.
I give it a good outta' ten.
