funny think is, I recently learned about The Pillow Book, a classic from 1002 year in Heian-period Japan, book of observations, musings and occasional poetry of a court lady who was very skilled in the art of wordsmithing, and one passage stood out to me (

It's interesting to see such an open defense of gossip, especially compared to the reaction of MC to it. Then again, I think that Sei Shōnagon didn't just gossip to make fun of someone (though she didn't mind doing it as well), she seemed to be really interested in the other people the same way she was interested in the whole world, and in describing it and putting it to paper.
